311 at Jiffy Lube Live

Metromix Street Teamer Katie MacGregor filled in for our Pop Insider music blogger Jody Taylor for this week's 311 "Unity Tour" show:
My friend Natasha and I packed up the mini coop and headed towards Virginia with 311’s CD "Evolver," recovered from my high school days, playing on the stereo.

Walking through the stadium at Jiffy Lube Live, Sublime with Rome had the crowd singing the classics like “Santeria”  and “What I Got”  and I couldn’t help but join in  . . . "love issss , it’s what I got , said remember that..."

The crowd for 311 was electric and the heat and excitement intensified with a mix of shirtless, sweaty, tatted guys, bikini topped girls, adolescent boys and 311 T-shirted girl groupies yelling as the lights went on and 311 started their set with “Hive”, “All Mixed Up” and “You Wouldn’t Believe” and then the appropriate “Sunset in July”  from their latest CD “Universal Pulse."

While in the press pit, I dodged crowd surfers and rowdy fans getting bounced trying to get close to the band. I don’t blame them, lead singer Nick Hexum is a very handsome man who managed to keep shedding clothes during the concert and ended up shirtless holding a guitar at the end.

No special effects needed for this concert with an awesome bass solo by crowd-chanted favorite Aaron "P-Nut" Wills .

Lighters and cell phones flickered throughout the venue for "Amber," and you couldn’t help but jump for “Beautiful Disaster” and “Come Original”.  The show ended in an encore performance that had the crowd cheering for more with “Down”.

Add these songs to your end of summer playlist from 311 and Sublime with Rome:
“Down”- 311
“Wild Nights” – 311
“Beautiful Disaster” -311
“What I Got” – Sublime with Rome
“Sunset in July” -311

Questions for your Wedding DJ

As with all of your vendors, it is important to be on the same page as them.  Whether you want a club dj emulating a South Beach  scene or a charismatic dj introducing “ice breakers” to the party you want your wedding to reflect you ,especially when it comes to the music.
I keep finding these questions popping up when talking to client’s djs, and they should be agreed on by the couple and made aware of for the dj.
Here are my Dj questions / important info.
The title and artists of your important songs-
I will always love you by Whitney Houston is a bit different than the Dolly Parton version.
Introduction of the Bridal Party
First Dance
Father Daughter Dance
Mother Son Dance
Cake Cutting
Bouquet Toss
Garter Toss
Last Song
and any other important songs you want included.

If your dj is acting as emcee the order of the bridal party and phonetic  break down of names and pronunciation
Liz Lessig
Liz Less-igh  - correct  Liz Leeegggginnnngs  - not quite, but a great new nickname

The timeline of the wedding and cues for important things.
Before dinner the Best Man will toast followed by his break dance performance then the buffett stations will have a soft open. (True occurrence)

Will you be having “ice breakers” ?
Ice breakers such as an anniversary dance get couples to the dance floor.
The anniversary dance calls all married couples to the dance floor and slowly the emcee will call out  “all those married for a year or less  please leave the dance floor” .  . .  and so on until it’s the couple that has been married the longest  left standing.

Have they played at this reception venue before?
Different venues have different sound ordinances and restrictions.

Do you have back up equipment?

Will they be playing music for the ceremony and cocktail hour?

What is on your do not play list?
Electric slide and chicken dance are constantly on this list.

Can guests make song requests?

Now get your newlywed booty on the dance floor and dance all night!

Alyson Miles Photography

Hi! I’m Alyson Miles, portrait and event photographer.  A life-long photo enthusiast, I took my first photography classes at the age of sixteen.  Those early classes at the Washington School of Photography and Charles W. Woodward High School in Rockville, MD (if you remember Woodward then we are both dating ourselves! LOL)  instilled in me a passion and skill that allowed me to document so many wonderful moments in my personal life  and now, as a professional  photographer, I enjoy being invited to document the milestones in the lives of others.

I am currently based in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia where I live with my three children and boston terrier.  However, I make frequent trips to the D.C. area to visit with my many family, friends, and clients. Often accompanying me for photo-shoots is my friend and fellow photographer, Courtney Sandoval of Courtney Sandoval Photography.  Courtney is a fabulous photographer and by working events together we are able to get the best coverage possible for our clients and make sure we get “the shot.”

I hope you will take a few minutes to visit my website, www.milesstonesphotogrpahy.com, and enjoy my photos.  If you have any questions about my work and how I may be able to help you, please do not hesitate to call.
